Siachen Glacier Causes Dispure in UNSC

The debates have reached an impass about natural resources and their owners
By: Thalia Duarte
After the long discussion about the cease-fire in the Kashmir region, the Council proceeded to debate about the natural resources of the area and to whom they should belong. Most of the discussion was centered around the Siachen Glacier, located in the line of control between India and Pakistan.
The glacier holds great economic resources for both countries, being also a big water source during the thawing season of the ice. Pakistan and India both claim sovereignty over the glacier. Pakistan has invaded the line of control and says that India did the same, even though the Delegate of India affirms they did not invade, since the territory is theirs.
Other nations plead Pakistan to retreat the area and withdraw their troops. The delegation of Pakistan responded by saying that if the glacier was given to them, they would withdraw with no further problems. They say that if India has control over the glacier, they would also control the water flow in their country, leaving them at the mercy of the Indian government.
Some delegations accused Pakistan of being a terrorist, saying that they wouldn`t give the control of the region to a nation known for invading other countries. Other delegations want a more peaceful way out, suggesting both countries to have the rights over the glacier. For some delegates, the best way is to make the region a multinational area, but that was met with great resistance by most nations present.
